Consistent Sultans: PSL Finalists For Four Consecutive Years

Multan Sultans display impeccable consistency once again, as they make it to the final of season 9 of the Pakistan Super League. Their fourth final in a row.

In the qualifier of PSL 9 Multan Sultans faced Peshawar Zalmi on March 14th, 2024 where the finalists from last year outplayed Zalmi in all aspects of the game. Peshawar's skipper Babar Azam won the toss and decided to bat first on a sluggish Karachi surface. Babar started off well but wasn't supported by his partners on the other end as the trio of Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris and Haseebullah failed in the big game. Babar also slowed down as his innings progressed and lost his wicket to a pinpoint yorker by Chris Jordan. Peshawar Zalmi were soon bowled out on a below par total of 146 runs courtesy of brilliant bowling by the Sultans.

The leading wicket taker of the tournament, Usama Mir, added two more wickets to his name and now has 23 wickets in the competition. The experienced fast bowling duo of David Willey and Chris Jordan were outstanding, as Willey picked up an early wicket of Saim and Jordan broke the back of Zalmi's batting lineup by getting rid of Babar and Powell. Sultans' skipper Mohammad Rizwan was once again brilliant as a captain; smart with his bowling changes and field placements.

Sultans came out for the chase and the young Yasir Khan looked superb with his classy shots, scored a match winning fifty, whereas Mohammad Rizwan's poor tournament with the bat continued, he scored 15 off 21 balls with a poor strike rate of 71.43. After Multan lost their openers, Usman Khan who scored 36 off 28 balls and Iftikhar Ahmed who scored 22 off 8 balls finished off the game comfortably for Multan Sultans.

Peshawar's spinners were economical, but pacers were expensive as Wood, Irshad and Walter all went for runs. Zalmi's skipper Babar and coach Darren Sammy have a lot of thinking to do before their next game where they will face the winner of Eliminator 1 which will be played between Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United in Karachi on March 15th, 2024.

Sultans will now rest as they play the Final of PSL 9 on Monday, March 18th, 2024. Multan Sultans won the title in PSL 6 and lost in the finals of PSL 7 and 8. Will they repeat a PSL 6 and win their second title, or will they continue to choke in the finals like they did in the previous two editions?

Time will tell.
